Bilingualism Statistics in 2022: US, UK & Global (1)

Being bilingual or multilingual comes with many benefits, from improved cognitive abilities to greater cultural awareness, understanding, and creativity. But just how many people in the world can speak more than one language in 2022? And which members of society are most likely to do so?

To find out, we conducted a survey asking 2,000 UK adults how many languages they speak fluently, other than their mother tongue. We also conducted an analysis of Google searches to determine which languages are most sought after in terms of learning in each US state. We combined this with further research into global language use statistics to bring you all of the most up-to-date facts and figures on the topic of bilingualism and multilingualism in 2022.

  • There are approximately 3.3 billion bilingual people worldwide, accounting for 43% of the population.
  • 36% of UK adults are bilingual. That’s over 24 million people.
  • Spanish is the most popular second language to learn in the US.
  • More searches are made in California for terms related to learning a language than any other US state.
  • More young people (aged 16-24) are bilingual than any other age group in the UK.
  • Belfast and Brighton have more bilingual speakers than any other UK city.
  • Indonesia is the largest bilingual country in the world being home to more than 200 million bilingual individuals.

What does bilingual mean?

Bilingualism or being bilingual means to be able to speak two languages fluently. The word originates from the Latin ‘bi’, meaning ‘having two’, and ‘lingua’, meaning tongue. But what is a mother tongue? Well, the term mother tongue refers to the language which a person has grown up speaking from early childhood.

Throughout this article we’ll also mention multilingualism or being multilingual. This refers to the ability to understand and use more than two languages fluently.

What percentage of people are bilingual in 2022?

As many language communities are still yet to be studied, it’s difficult to say exactly how many people in the world speak two languages fluently. However, current estimates predict that around 43% of people are bilingual, with a further 17% being multilingual.

This means that more than half of the world’s population can speak more than one language fluently.

But how do bilingualism rates differ from country to country? To find how many people in the UK are bilingual, we conducted a survey using the market research company Censuswide to ask 2,000 UK adults:

How many people are bilingual in the UK?

Our survey of 2,000 UK adults was conducted in October 2021 and found that:

  • Over a third (36%) of UK adults can speak more than one language fluently. This means that there are around 24.5 million bilingual adults in the UK.
  • 17.5% are bilingual, so can fluently speak 2 languages.
  • And 6.5% of people in the UK are multilingual, as they can speak 3 or more languages fluently.

What’s more:

  • 1 in 20 people say they can speak 3 languages fluently (5%).
  • Whilst 1.4% say they can fluently speak 4 languages.
  • And 0.1% say they’re able to speak 5 or more languages fluently!

Is bilingualism more common in men or women?

Many linguists have noted similarities and differences between the way in which different genders use language. But who is more likely to speak another language fluently? Men or women*?

Well, our survey of 2,000 UK adults revealed that they’re both just as likely as one other to speak a second language! The survey found a similar number of men and women are bilingual, as 18% of men and 17.2% of women in the United Kingdom say they can speak a second language fluently.

*The survey did not provide respondents with any other option than ‘male’ or ‘female’. This limits the data as it may have meant that some respondents were not represented in the way in which they would usually identify.

Which age group is most likely to be bilingual?

The older we are, the longer we have lived, so the more likely we are to have travelled, read and learned more languages, right? Well, our survey found that this may not be the case. In fact:

(Video) Teaching in the US vs. the rest of the world

  • More young people are bilingual than any other age group, as almost a quarter of those aged 16-24 say they can speak two languages fluently (24.5%).
  • Those aged 35-44 are the second most likely to be able to speak two languages, as 18.5% of people in this age category say they are bilingual.
  • The least likely age group to speak more than one language are those aged 55 and over, as just 15% of people this age say they can speak two languages fluently.

Multilingualism by age

So it’s clear that far more young people in the UK are bilingual. But which age group is most likely to be multilingual (able to speak more than 2 languages fluently)? To find out, we took a closer look at the demographic breakdowns of our survey and found that:

  • 16-24 year olds are by far the most likely to be able to speak multiple different languages, as more than a third of people in this age group can speak more than two languages.
  • Again those aged 55+ are the least likely to be multilingual, with just 5% of people over 55 saying they’re able to speak more than two languages fluently.

Are there more bilingual and multilingual people in major cities? Or do more rural areas have a higher proportion?

Our survey found that:

  • Belfast and Brighton have more bilingual speakers than any other city in the UK, as a quarter of people in these cities can speak two languages fluently.
  • Cardiff also has one of the highest proportions of bilingual people in the UK, with 21.5% of people being bilingual.
  • Interestingly though, when looking at the proportion of people who are both bilingual and multilingual, London takes top spot. Nearly half of the population of London can speak at least one other language (49.5%).

How many people are bilingual in the US?

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 21.6% of people in the US speak a language other than English at home. That’s 1 in every 5 adults.

It’s important to note, however, that this may be an inaccurate estimate of the number of bilingual people in the US. This is because some individuals may speak other languages fluently but may not use them at home.

Which second languages are most popular in the US?

There are a variety of different ways in which a person can learn a second language. They may have grown up around a speaker of that language, learned it at school or even decided to get a tutor or teach themself the language as an adult.

To find out a little more about language learning preferences of US adults in 2022, we conducted an analysis of search volumes in each state for various terms centred around language learning. To do this we used the online search analysis tool Keyword Finder, which enabled us to obtain average monthly search volumes for the 20 most widely spoken languages in the world, proceeded by the word ‘learn’ (eg. ‘learn Spanish’, ‘learn German’ etc).

Our analysis found that:

  • Spanish is the most popular second language to learn in the US, with ‘learn Spanish’ being searched for online 75,300 times a month!
  • English is the second most sought after language when it comes to learning, with an average of 24,800 searches being carried out online each month for the term ‘learn English’.
  • Japanese is also a popular language amongst those wanting to learn, being searched for online approximately 20,600 times every month in the US.

As you can see from the graph:

  • Korean and French are also highly sought after when it comes to learning another language, with the terms ‘learn Korean’ and ‘learn French’ receiving 18,000 and 13,200 monthly searches respectively.
  • Chinese, Russian and German are also popular choices amongst those in the US
  • As are Arabic, Portuguese and Hindi.

Which US states want to learn second languages the most?

Although the rate of bilingualism in the US does appear to be less than the global average, it seems that more and more people are expressing an interest in learning another language, especially since the coronavirus lockdown.

As you can see from the graph below, searches for phrases like ‘learn korean’ peaked significantly at the start of lockdown, and have continued to be higher than they previously were.

What are the benefits of being bilingual?

There are a wide range of benefits of being bilingual or multilingual as either an adult or a child! Here are just a few:

  • Studies have found that children who have learned a second language at an early age have been found to have better memory and attention levels than monolingual learners.
  • Bilingualism has also been linked to delayed onset of Alzheimer’s as numerous studies have found that bilinguals are more resilient in dealing with neurodegeneration than monolinguals.
  • Numerous studies have found a link between bilingualism and creativity, with research suggesting that bilinguals’ enhanced executive functioning and experience with multiple cultures contribute to their creativity level.

Professor of Applied Linguistics at Lancaster University, Panos Athanasopoulos says:

“Learning a language is beneficial because you’re not just learning another set of grammar rules and vocabulary. You are also learning a new way of thinking, it is a window into another culture, and often a mirror into yours. And the process of learning and using two languages is also beneficial for the brain, because it keeps it active for longer – many studies show that the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s may be delayed in bilinguals by up to 5 years.”
